When You Need Renewal: Return, Rely, Remember

When You Need Renewal: Return, Rely, Remember
There are seasons in life when everything feels dry—spiritually, emotionally, even physically. You show up, but your heart isn’t fully there. You believe in God, but something feels distant. If you’ve ever found yourself there, you’re not alone—and more importantly, Scripture shows us the way back.
In 1 Samuel 7, Israel finds itself in that exact place. After years of wandering, compromise, and defeat, they reach a moment of desperation—and that desperation becomes the doorway to renewal.
Their story reveals three powerful steps we can take when we need renewal in our own lives: return, rely and remember.
1. Return: Come Back with Your Whole Heart
“…all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.” (1 Samuel 7:2)
Renewal begins with honest return.
Israel didn’t start with celebration—they started with lament. Lament is not weakness; it’s worship in its rawest form. It’s the courage to say, “God, something is wrong—and I need You.”
We live in a culture that avoids pain. We distract, numb, blame or push through. But Scripture invites us to do something different: bring it to God fully and honestly.
Lament clears the way for repentance.
Samuel’s message to the people was direct:
“If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart… put away the foreign gods.”
Real return requires real change.
- Not partial surrender, but all your heart
- Not small adjustments, but complete removal
- Not divided loyalty, but serving God only
For Israel, it meant tearing down idols like Baal and Ashtaroth. For us, idols may look different—career, relationships, money, control, comfort—but the call is the same: put away anything that takes God’s place.
Renewal begins when we stop negotiating with sin and start surrendering fully.
2. Rely: Depend on God Completely
When the Philistines heard Israel had gathered, they came to attack. Fear returned immediately.
But this time, Israel responded differently.
Instead of relying on strategy or strength, they said to Samuel:
“Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us.”
They chose dependence.
Samuel offered a sacrifice and cried out to God—and God answered. Not with subtlety, but with power. Scripture says the Lord thundered against the Philistines and threw them into confusion.
The victory didn’t come from Israel’s ability. It came from God’s intervention.
This is the shift renewal produces:
- From self-reliance → to God-reliance
- From control → to surrender
- From fear → to faith
We often try to fight spiritual battles with natural strength. But renewal reminds us: the battle belongs to the Lord.
When you rely on God, you stop striving for outcomes and start trusting His power.
3. Remember: Don’t Forget What God Has Done
After the victory, Samuel set up a stone and named it Ebenezer, saying:
“Till now the Lord has helped us.”
This wasn’t just a marker—it was a declaration.
Israel had experienced defeat in the past at a place called Ebenezer. But now, that same name became a symbol of victory. God had rewritten their story.
We all need “stones of remembrance” in our lives—moments we can point back to and say, “God was faithful there.”
Because when we forget, we drift.
But when we remember, we stay grounded in faith.
The greatest reminder we have isn’t just a stone—it’s a resurrected Savior.
What once symbolized defeat—the cross, the tomb—has become the ultimate declaration of victory. The stone was rolled away, and everything changed.
Because of Jesus:
- Dead things come alive
- Broken things are restored
- Lost people are found
When You Need Renewal
If your soul feels dry today, the path forward is clear:
Return
Come honestly. Lament. Repent. Remove anything that competes with God. Give Him your whole heart.
Rely
Stop striving. Start trusting. Let God fight the battles you were never meant to carry.
Remember
Look back at His faithfulness. Anchor your life in what He has already done—and what He promises to do again.
Renewal isn’t complicated—but it is intentional.
And the same God who met Israel in their moment of desperation is ready to meet you today.
Till now, the Lord has helped us—and He’s not done yet.
