Ten Verses to Pray During the National Day of Prayer

In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a bill to encourage our nation to unite in prayer. Since then, the National Day of Prayer has become an annual event on the first Thursday of May.

On this upcoming National Day of Prayer, here are ten verses you can pray over our nation and world.

1. Pray for boldness in all that we ask of God

1 John 5:14

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him

2. Pray for our leaders to walk in the ways of God

1 Timothy 2:1-2

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.

3. Pray we are a light to the world

Isaiah 60:1

Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.

4. Pray for our unity as the Church

John 17:21

I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

5. Pray for unwavering trust in the LORD

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

6. Pray for God’s peace to take over our communities

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

7. Pray for our faith to rise up

Mark 9:23

And Jesus said to him, “If You can? All things are possible to him who believes.”

8. Pray that God’s Presence will be near to all

Psalm 145:18

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

9. Pray for victory against the powers of darkness

Ephesians 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

10. Pray for revival in our nation

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He choose for His inheritance.
