Having a relationship with Jesus Christ is the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. The forgiveness of sin and the power to live a transformed life, along with the purpose of knowing our Creator, is second to none. But like any relationship, if it’s not cultivated, it can become stagnant or even forgotten. So how do Christ-followers deepen their relationship with their Savior? The answer is simple, but is often easier said than done-–we deepen our relationship with God by cultivating daily connections.
Like all relationships, we grow to know more about others when we spend time with them. Talking to them, doing activities together, going through the highs and the lows, and sometimes just sitting in silence watching a beautiful sunset or staring up at the stars.
God invites us to spend time with Him in the same manner, treating our relationship with Him like all others but cherishing it more than any other.
Oftentimes, daily devotion to Jesus looks like reading a small portion of the Bible or saying a memorized verse or prayer. Then we set our books or journals down and go about our day. We carry our anxieties, our fears, our joys, and excitement throughout the day, but we leave Jesus on our table or on the shelf until the next day we pick it up.
Please don’t mishear me-–the act of daily Bible-reading and reverence through prayer is important, but our relationship needs to be more than that.
As Jesus makes clear, He wants not only to save us but to be in relationship with us. He wants to be a part of our entire day, not just the time we set aside. This makes it hard to figure out exactly what daily devotion means, but the long and short of it is that Jesus simply wants to go where you go. Bring Jesus in to every conversation, talk to Him while you drive, in your office, or at home.
Jesus wants to be more than an appointment, He wants to be your friend.
