Twice a week during our “KNOWN” sermon series, we will be sharing stories of people who have found community at River Valley Church. This is part 5 of 8.
How did you find River Valley Church?
In March 2016 I found out that I had been accepted into the graduate program for Occupational Therapy at the University of Minnesota. I was so excited for this new chapter in my academic and professional career, but also nervous about leaving behind my family, friends, and amazing church community in Georgia. My top priority was finding a church to call home and a community that would become family. I found out about River Valley Minneapolis Campus after looking up the church online. I knew immediately that I wanted to try this church. A few weeks before I moved, I was in town finalizing details and I decided to check it out. It was my first time driving to the city, I got lost, couldn’t find the parking garage, and eventually found a spot on the street while praying that I didn’t get towed! I made it through the doors and walked over to the welcome center and said, “Hey, I’m from Georgia and I’m moving here in a few weeks!”
Tell us about how you became “Known” at River Valley Church.
That morning I got connected to Anna Dickie, who I’ve said many time is the person you want to meet at the Minneapolis campus. She reached out after church about connecting over coffee and invited me to her lifegroup. I remember making the 20-hour drive with my Mom in a U-haul full of my belongings and being filled with peace that this was God’s plan all along and the assurance that He had already begun to place me in the right community. A few weeks later I moved into my apartment, started Graduate school, and attended Anna & Gracie’s lifegroup all in one week. Through that lifegroup I met incredible people and became a part of a community that has supported and encouraged me, and made a seemingly hard transition so effortless. Moving to a new city is exciting, fun, and scary all at the same time, and while I love Minneapolis it’s the people who make it feel like home. River Valley is a life-giving community, and without it, I know my experience in Minnesota would be starkly different.
What would you say to someone who is wondering whether connecting at River Valley Church is right for them?
From day one the Minneapolis campus has felt like home and the people like family. This is a community of people who truly want to do life together, celebrate your successes, process through the lows, and always make room for more to come!
